The first Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer confirms Knuckles as the villain and this is why the popular character of the video game series didn’t team up with Sonic. Throughout the Sonic series and in various other media, Knuckles frequently appears as the main character alongside the popular star of the series. However, despite this legacy, there are good reasons why Knuckles might oppose Sonic.

After the success of 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Paramount quickly moved on with plans for a sequel. Knuckles as a villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 should also set up Idris Elba’s echidna to become a key part of the franchise going forward.
