The first Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer confirms Knuckles as the villain and this is why the popular character of the video game series didn’t team up with Sonic. Throughout the Sonic series and in various other media, Knuckles frequently appears as the main character alongside the popular star of the series. However, despite this legacy, there are good reasons why Knuckles might oppose Sonic.
After the success of 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Paramount quickly moved on with plans for a sequel. The first film teased a lot about how Sonic’s story could continue, with Sonic the Hedgehog’s ending giving Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) a more accurate look at the gameplay and behind-the-scenes Its credits show the arrival of Tails on Earth. Besides continuing Sonic and Dr. Robotnik’s feud and properly introducing Tails, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also brings Knuckles into the picture. Red echidna is a fan-favorite character in the Sonic video game series, and choosing Idris Elba to voice Knuckles only adds to the excitement that he will appear in the sequel. The first Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer offered a first look at Knuckles and his powers, but some people may have been surprised by his role.
Despite the character’s popularity and association as an ally of Sonic, Knuckles is again a villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Knuckles’ villainous role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a departure from the way he was primarily portrayed during his nearly 20 years of video game appearances. However, Knuckles was not always a hero, as his first appearance made him a villain. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduced Knuckles to the canon of the franchise by making him Sonic’s rival. This is the result of Dr. Robotnik’s manipulation of Knuckles and his mission to protect Master Emerald. Robotnik tricked Knuckles into believing that Sonic and Tails were planning to steal the Master Emerald. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 seems to stick to the source material for Knuckles’ introduction by positioning him as a villain from the start.

While Knuckles doesn’t appear much in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer, it’s easy to see how the film has stayed true to his video game debut. Knuckles is clearly a good match for Dr. Robotnik, as Sonic comments that they want to steal his powers. However, it is unclear whether Knuckles’ villain in turn is for the same reason. Robotnik is said to have found the Master Emerald, but there is no indication that Sonic is also pursuing it. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 might give Knuckles another reason to believe Sonic is a threat, but their rivalry will begin in the sequel.
Knuckles as a villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 should also set up Idris Elba’s echidna to become a key part of the franchise going forward. It’s likely that Knuckles will realize that Robotnik is a threat he needs to worry about, which will prompt him to team up with Sonic and Tails to defeat him. Knuckles can then go on to fulfill his video game mission of being the guardian of Master Emerald and help Sonic in any future adventures.
